Freight Forwarder (Also called forwarder )

Firm specializing in arranging storage and shipping of merchandise on behalf of its shippers. It usually provides a full range of services including: tracking inland transportation, preparation of shipping and export documents, warehousing, booking cargo space, negotiating freight charges, freight consolidation, cargo insurance, and filing of insurance claims. Freight forwarders usually ship under their own bills of lading or air waybills (called house bill of lading or house air waybill) and their agents or associates at the destination (overseas freight forwarders) provide document delivery, deconsolidation, and freight collection services.



Cargo 
All articles, goods, materials, merchandise, or wares carried on board an aircraft, ship, train, or truck, and for which an air waybill, or bill of lading, or other receipt is issued by the carrier. It includes livestock, but usually does not include bunkers (fuel for powering the vessel or vehicle), accompanying baggage, vessel or vehicle's equipment and spare parts, mail, and stores. Personnel carried onboard are classified as crew or passengers.

cargo agent 

A person who is responsible for all of the logistical aspects of transporting materials or parcels, including scheduling, packing, routing, documentation, tracking, customs clearance, compliance, client communications, and negotiating on behalf of clients for the best terms and pricing.

cargo assembly


The arrangement and holding of cargo at a shipping point for future transportation. The assembly may include cargo containers, bulk assembly or pallet loads.
Cargo Insurance
Insurance that covers cargo as it is transported to another location.


Cargo manifest

A shipping document used by customs personnel reviewing a particular transport vehicle's intended trip that summarizes all bills of lading that have been issued by the carrier or its representative for that particular shipment. For example, a cargo manifest might be used for shipments made by sea, air or land, and will generally show the shipment's cosigner and consignee, as well as listing product details such as number, value, origin and destination.

Cargo selectivity system

A system used by the Bureau of Customs to distinguish high risk cargo from low risk ones. The system identifies whether the cargo be examined intensively or generally based on criteria such as the consignee, tariff number, country of origin and the shipper.

Cargo Sharing 

Arrangement between two or more trading partners to share the goods traffic between them in an agreed upon proportion, for carrying in vessels or vehicles controlled or owned by their nationals.

Cargo Ton
Ocean freight is billed either in weight tons or volume (measurement) tons, depending on the density of the material or the manner in which it is shipped (containerized, break bulk, bulk). Weight ton equals (1) 2,000 pounds (short ton), (2) 2,240 pounds (long ton), or (3) 1,000 Kilo or 2,204.68 pounds (metric ton). Measurement ton equals (1) 40 cubic feet (1.12 cubic meters), or (2) 1 cubic meter (35.3 cubic feet).

Cargo Unit

A shipping container, vehicle, tank, pallet or other system that is not part of a vessel, but is used to transport cargo.
